Saint Kevin of Glendalough, also known as Coemgen, was an Irish saint born in the late 5th century. He is considered one of the most important figures in Irish monasticism and is the patron saint of blackbirds. Saint Kevin founded the monastic settlement at Glendalough, which became one of the most prestigious monastic communities in Ireland. He was known for his intense devotion to prayer and asceticism, living a life of solitude and contemplation in the wilderness of Glendalough.

Saint Kevin’s reputation for holiness attracted many disciples to Glendalough, who sought to learn from his example and guidance. His strict discipline and dedication to prayer inspired others to follow in his footsteps and seek a deeper connection with God. Despite his fame and influence, Saint Kevin remained humble and focused on his spiritual pursuits, rejecting worldly temptations and comforts in favor of a life of simplicity and devotion.

Saint Kevin’s legacy has endured for centuries, with his life and teachings continuing to inspire others to seek God through prayer and contemplation. His monastic settlement at Glendalough remains a popular pilgrimage site for those seeking solace and spiritual renewal. Saint Kevin’s dedication to prayer and asceticism serves as a reminder of the importance of inner reflection and devotion in one’s spiritual journey.

A series of works inspired by the lives of Early Irish Saints. Saints included in this series are Saint Patrick, St Brigid, St Colmcille, St Enda, St Brendan the Navigator, St Cummian the Tall, St Ciarán of Clonmacniose, St Ninnidh, St Ita, St Kevin, St Adomnán, St Cainnech, St Columbanus, St Gall. The series was created with mixed media, inks, gouache and watercolour. The first image i created in the series was of Saint Kevin of Glendalough, inspired by a visit there some years ago, it is a beautiful place for pilgrimage and for the imagination of the artist, its landscape is very inspiring and one can only imagine what it was like in the time of saint Kevin. There are many Early Irish female saints, which i hope to make a series of soon. I made three images so far of the early female saints, one of St Bridgid, St Ita and St Liban the mermaid saint. I plan to self publish a book in the near future dealing with the Early Irish Saints, to keep the sacred fire of the burning. Studying their lives is very inspiring to the way the relate to animals and birds to their deeply spiritual prayer life and their travelling to other lands to keep the faith alive.
