Description
Orpheus calming the animals with his lyre.
Mixed media on board.
The image evokes the Greek idea of a lost Golden Age, a time when humans and animals lived in peace and the world was in a state of natural harmony. Orpheus, through his art, can briefly restore this age.
This miraculous ability to calm the wild is a prelude to his greater, and more tragic, quest: to move the immovable rulers of the Underworld and retrieve his wife, Eurydice, using that very same lyre.
